A-Pou’s Taste

ATO’s favorite food truck in the city: A-Pou’s Taste, a Taiwanese dumpling cart that also serves up some home-style soup and noodle dishes (although we’ve only ever ordered the dumplings!).  Their carts can be found near City Hall, in the East Village and in the Upper West Side.  Since our first discovery of this stall over a year ago, walking around the UWS with ATO is like chasing an excited boy on a treasure hunt: his eyes are always darting around, on the lookout, scoping out the scene while babbling on and on about those delicious golden dumplings.  And apparently we’re not the only ones who have developed a liking for them: in 2010 they were nominated for the Vendy Award’s Rookie of the Year category!

There are 4 different flavors to choose from: the Taiwanese Special (pork), the Hong Kongese Experience (chicken), the Korean Kimchi (beef) and the Japanese Natural (veggie).  You can choose a mix of flavors, although our favorite is the classic pork.  Dumplings are offered 5 for $3.50, 10 for $6 and 15 for $9.  They are long and narrow in shape (not like the fat crescent shaped dumplings you’ll find at most Chinese restaurants in the city) and the skin is thin and often semi-burnt to a perfect crisp.  They’re served with a sweet, light soy sauce.   While not always consistently great (sometimes the ones at the end tend to get a bit soggy), for the price and convenience, this place always hits the spot!

Please don't judge me for all the crap (albeit delicious crap) that I put into my body. My only defense is that I run a lot, which is (partly) why I eat like this. For full disclosure, I don't eat anything that looks like it did when it was alive (no meat on bones, no shellfish out of the shell...you get it). Exception: mussels and clams. I don't eat any fish (except sometimes at nice restaurants). I don't eat raw meat and I don't eat any weird organs or offal (all of the foregoing, collectively, the "restricted foods"). Any comments related to the restricted foods are third party opinions (mostly from my adventurous better half, ATO).
